portrait of mrs clay . When I was studying in Manchester I started the portrait of mrs Clay in my lodgings . Mrs Clay was a seventy year old cleaning lady her face was extremely lined from years of hard work and cares .My friends and fellow students were afraid that I would hurt her feelings by too much realism . Well I considered the problem and decided that if I worked in planes ( almost cubisticaly ) the portrait would still look like mrs Clay and it did !
